Kangbashi, a district in Ordos, China, is often described as a "well-dressed ghost town." Construction of this urban area began in 2000 and spanned sixteen years, resulting in a meticulously designed municipal square and expansive infrastructure. Despite its impressive architecture and amenities, Kangbashi suffers from extremely low population density, making it eerily quiet and largely uninhabited.

Kangbashi's transformation into a ghost city can be attributed primarily to poor architectural planning and a lack of essential services and urban infrastructure. According to Forbes, these shortcomings have made it challenging to attract tourists and new residents. The combination of inadequate construction and high property taxes has further discouraged potential inhabitants. Although Kangbashi has the capacity to accommodate one million people, only about a tenth of that number currently reside there.
