10. Alaska's Kennecott

When it was established in 1911, it expanded rapidly. Kennecott ranked among the top 10 mine producers in America between 1915 and 1922. Kennecott's production value in 1916 was $885.83 million (adjusted for inflation). Kennecott mined billions of pounds of copper annually.

Kennecott is located inside the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve and is still an abandoned mining town. In the 1970s, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark District to save it from being demolished.
